It was named after Renato William Jones, a basketball promoter and one of the founders of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

The William Jones Cup tournament started in 1977 and is held annually. There are two version of the William Jones Cup — the tournament for men's basketball and for women's basketball — both dominated by American teams since 1977.

The 2011 William Jones Cup is currently in progress, happening from August 6-14, 2011. Two tournaments – men’s and women’s basketball – are being participated to. Currently, Smart Gilas Team Philippines is already at 3-1.
