Facebook is Closing Down | Facebook to Close Down | Is it True that Facebook is Closing Down?

Just a couple of hours ago, rumors started to circulate in the internet that the social networking behemoth Facebook is closing down on March 15, 2011. Another date identified as Facebook's closedown date was May 15, 2011.

Apparently it all started when Mark Zuckerberg, one of the founders and owner of Facebook, was allegedly quoted saying in a press conference outside his Palo Alto office “Facebook has gotten out of control and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness.”

Meanwhile, Vice President of Technical Affairs at Facebook Avrat Humarthi allegedly said “After March 15th the whole website shuts down. So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You won’t be able to get them back once Facebook goes out of business.”

We would like to clarify to you dear readers that we cannot guarantee the accuracy or the truthfulness of these "Facebook is closing down" statements, thus the usage of the word "allegedly." These are just rumors: Rumors which could prove to be true just like Apple's iPhone 4 or ridiculously false.

In this light, there are a thousand reasons why Facebook would not close down. Here's two among a thousand reasons:

• Facebook is a money-making machine. There are too many stakes involved for this titan of a social network to close down. It's just too profitable;
• Even if Mark Zuckerberg wants Facebook to close down, he can't simply just do as he wishes. First of all, Facebook has other owners aside from him. Other people with huge sums of money invested at Facebook will just remove him from the company if he is proven to be a danger to the social network's future existence.

Update: The source of the hoax is found at a post on the weeklyworldnews.com website, which is a hoax website itself (see: Alien Spaceships to Attack Earth by 2011) by a writer named J.B. Smitts. To date, the post itself has garnered 5,000+ comments, which makes it very controversial indeed.

Facebook has become a household word ever since its launch. It lets people from faraway places talk to each other live like they were just beside each other. It's also a monster making machine that wouldn't be easily brought down (hint: Zynga). In fact Mark Zuckerberg, only the second youngest person to be in the front cover of Time Magazine, dubbed his Facebook "Internet 2," very strong words that show that Facebook isn't closing down soon. If it is closing down anyway, call the Zuck nuts.
