How to Prevent Facebook, Twitter From Tracking You

As social networks grow in size, so does their presence in the internet. As you can see here in this web page, I have quite a number of social media buttons installed: I have the Facebook Like button, the Twitter Tweet button, and the Google +1 button. To my defense, I've installed these buttons for people to be able to share the content they like in my site.

Now, did you know that these buttons, even without you clicking on them, are transmitting your activity already? What they'll do is transmit your browsing habits to companies that are willing to buy them for a sum of money or something similar. I found here a tool that would prevent Facebook and Twitter from tracking you ergo you won't leave any data-trail in any site until you actually click on a social media button i.e. the Like, Tweet, and/or +1 button. It's called ShareMeNot.

But what is ShareMeNot? As its home page says:

ShareMeNot is a Firefox add-on designed to prevent third-party buttons (such as the Facebook “Like” button or the Twitter “tweet” button) embedded by sites across the Internet from tracking you until you actually click on them. Unlike traditional solutions, ShareMeNot does this without completely removing the buttons from the web experience.

That said, let's proceed on how to prevent Facebook, Twitter from tracking you:

1. Go to this website: http://sharemenot.cs.washington.edu/;

2. Locate the ShareMeNot button and click the download link below it. Alternatively, you can download ShareMeNot here*;

3. A few confirmation boxes will appear. Just click OK on all of them to install ShareMeNot;

4. Restart your Firefox browser. Congratulations, you're now tracking-free!

*ShareMeNot is currently available for Mozilla Firefox only

You should definitely try out this plug-in especially if you're a privacy nerd. Even then, at least you now know how to prevent Facebook, Twitter and a plethora of other social networking sites as well (like Digg) from tracking you.

How to Get Free McDonald's Coffee

McDonald's would be giving away free coffee for 5 days. Yes, you read it right. They would be giving away 8 oz. coffee randomly via claim coupons.

I dunno if this has something to do with Noynoy Aquino's reveal on PAGCOR's coffee corruption on his SONA but I think this is just McDonald's way of promoting their new P25.00 coffee. You've seen the TV ad (the coffee with a smiley sticky note at the office), now I guess they're making people taste the coffee so it could be distinguished. Let's face it: Coffee is seen by people as inclusives to breakfast meals. If they won't do promoting I guess close to no one will buy it. But with this great marketing ploy, people would remember their P25.00 coffee as it is, no burgers or fries attached.

Pokemon Lilac Download

We have another beautiful Pokemon rom hack in the name of Pokemon Lilac. It's a FireRed-based hack made by Dr. Fuji.

What's very noticeable in this Pokemon Lilac is its very gorgeous tiles. You should expect more of the same old Pokemon in this rom hack because it's set around the time of Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal. That said, it still looks amazing. And I like how Dr. Fuji infused old Pokemon, taking advantage of and integrating Lilac's storyline into the official Pokemon merchandise storyline. You'll feel like you're playing an official sidestory.

Pokemon Lilac Synopsis

It has been a long time coming, but you are now ready to take on a Pokemon adventure across your home region. You're all set to recieve your Pokemon from Professor Oak a larger neighbouring town when your mother informs you that Oak is investigating the nearby Haplon Cave system. Upon your arrival at the caves, a small earthquake shakes the earth around you and a local hiker insists that the fleeing Pokemon demonstrate that it is too dangerous to progress. Once things settle down, you are given the all-clear signal and are allowed to continue to the next town. Inside the cave you come into contact with a determined Professor Oak, spying on a suspicious charcter further into the cave.

The man is no other than a member of the villainous Team Rocket which was thought to have been disbanded three years ago under their leader, Giovanni. Why are Team Rocket snooping around a small cave in Lowen? Why does a shady character continuously follow your every move? Why is your rival so mad at you, despite being friendly for many years beforehand?

The life of a rookie can be a tough one...

How to Register for Smart Always On Internet

Smart Telecommunications, the number one mobile telco in the Philippines, recently unveiled their Smart Always On internet service. Always On is aimed for light to moderate users of internet, namely the email, social networking, and video streaming users.

The Smart Always On internet service allows you to connect to the internet via 2G, EDGE, 3G and HSDPA. This pre-defined volume-based bandwidth allocation model is starting to be the trend here in the Philippines, starting from Wi-Tribe to Sky Internet to Smart if my memory serves me correctly.

What's wonderful with this service is the knowledge that you're actually paying for the amount of bandwidth you've consumed, unlike fixed postpaid internet plans which command, at minimum, P995.00 a month regardless of your internet usage.

For as low as the P300.00 250MB plan, you'll be able to do 1,500,000 tweets, 15,000 Facebook posts or 15,000 emails, according to Smart anyway.

3. Wait for an SMS confirmation from 2200. You can now use your Smart Always On internet service.**

*You should have at least P1.00 in your phone as maintaining balance
**Your internet service will automatically expire or disconnect once you consume your allocated bandwidth or once the period of time allocated to you ends, whichever comes first

Nintendo Will Slash 32% Off 3DS Price in August

It's confirmed: The Nintendo 3DS is ailing.

These past weeks random reports have been surfacing that the 3DS was already tanking, the PSP outnumbering it on units sold 2 to 1. I refused to believe it at first but it seemed inevitable because reports kept on persisting.

And just today, Game Informer broke word that Nintendo president Satoru Iwata is going to have his annual salary cut by 50%—that's approximately $1 million—to make up for company losses and for Nintendo to be able to afford the significant price cut their failing handheld will have. This just means that when the Nintendo 3DS hits the $169.99 mark on August, the company will—instead of profits—have losses on each 3DS unit sold. From a financial standpoint, that's really really bad. Or they could possibly planning for a comeback: Sell lots of units for a loss, release a slew of games for profit.

And like I said above the PSP, being as old as it is, is selling units against the 3DS 2 to 1 i.e. for every 2 units of PSP sold the 3DS only sells 1. If Nintendo is in this awful shape as early as now, imagine what would happen when Sony's new baby the PS Vita comes out in early December. That would surely make any CEO shit bricks.

I think I'm going to buy a 3DS now. Imagine, they were selling for $249.99 retail. Now they'd be on stores $80 off. That's awesome. I hope these prices will reflect in the Philippines immediately.

It's very accurate to say that the Blackberry Playbook app store has expanded significantly since the date when this list was compiled. Go check the official Blackberry Playbook app store for more updates.

Anyway, RIM has officially stated that it will expand its application ecosystem for the Blackberry PlayBook to include BlackBerry Java and Android-based applications. In a press release, RIM states that developers simply repackage, code sign, and submit their Android apps into BlackBerry App World. For now, the PlayBook will only support Android 2.3 apps.

RIM has also stated that the compatibility with Android applications will be included in a software update of the BlackBerry Tablet OS.

Sadly, the Blackberry Playbook pre-order period by Globe has already ended. But like I said, it's going to hit here in just a couple of days.

Old Spice "Mano a Mano" - Mustafah VS Fabio

I have been following a series of videos being released at YouTube by the Old Spice brand of deodorant about two dudes duking it off to the end on who's going to be the Old Spice mascot, the Old Spice Guy if I recall it correctly.

The funny African-American gym buff is Isaiah Mustafah while the long-haired blondie is—you might have seen him in porn flicks—Fabio.

The video below is their "Mano a Mano", the video where they both face off after a string of back and forth jab videos. Well you have to realize that all the jabs were scripted. So watch on below:

I'm a long time fan of the old Old Spice Guy (Isaiah Mustafah) and of course of the Old Spice brand. I use it everyday personally. But it's just quite sad that all the hype the Old Spice PR team build on their "Mano a Mano" promo didn't fetch as many views as I was expecting. 139,000+ views as of this writing? That's nothing. Peter Chao's videos regularly hit 350 to 400+ views.

Maybe this vid will pick up steam soon and go viral. And to think that Fabio even knocked on Reddit's door. If this promo tanks, he must feel like a dufus.
